Rooms with a View: History of Export Chinese Wallpaper from the Perspective of Gracie

Jennifer Gracie, Creative Director, Gracie Wallpaper

Hand painted Chinese wallpaper first began arriving in Europe in the 1700’s, at a time when traveling to far flung lands was rare.  These beautiful and sophisticated designs, artistically rendered as one of a kind murals were the ultimate symbol of success and style.  In the 1920’s, Jennifer’s great grandfather Charles R. Gracie began importing these unique works of art to New York, where they instantly became an integral part of the newly created world of interior design.
