Lectures will Remain at the Bruce Museum

Letter from the President:

GDAS will be returning the the Bruce Museum in the fall.

I talked with Suzanne Lio of the Bruce Museum. Because of continued problems with the regulating process and permits as well as other issues, the Bruce Museum is delayed with their plans to expand.

They welcome the Greenwich Decorative Arts Society back to our usual place and time this fall.

Suzanne said that we would be able to use the Bruce as usual on October 2, November 6, December 4 of 2017 and February 5 of 2018. (We are not meeting in January because of a holiday conflict.) Suzanne said there is always the possibility that there could be more delays at the Bruce, and we will know more by the end of the year.

I am relieved both for myself coming in as your new president, and for all of you, our members, who are accustomed to the Bruce, to be able to return to the Bruce this fall.

Betty Johnson and I spoke with Lisa at the Garden Education Center to confirm our spring dates there should we need them. The GEC was very understanding of our situation and there are no issues.

If these changes are confusing, please understand that this particular roller coaster has been out of our hands, as we have had to respond to the available dates as the Bruce has offered them.

do want to note again that Adele Raspe, Barbara Freeman, Betty Johnson and I visited at least 20 locations in Greenwich trying to find an appropriate venue which could commit to our dates. Each location has different drawbacks, many of them could not commit to the dates and it was very challenging to come up with a good alternative.

Returning to the Bruce this fall would give us a respite and we can continue to work on future plans.

We are starting off with Dressed to Excess: Extreme Fashion and Flamboyant Style in the 16th to the 18th Centuries by the brilliant Jonquil O'Reilly, Assistant Vice-president/Specialist, Old Master Paintings, Sotheby's, New York.

I look forward to seeing you at the Bruce Museum on Monday, October 2, 2017!

Karen Handal, President
